Like many car makers in the last couple of years, as part of the modernisation of the company, the excellent V40 hatchback was dropped from the range but that doesn’t make it any less interesting. As a compact five-door premium hatchback the car went into production in 2012 and was one of Volvo’s most popular models until it was discontinued in 2019.

The Car

Volvo cars are known for their safety. This solid and dependable car went through some changes during this time and the used Volvo V40’s available here on MHH Japanese Cars have differing specifications, as, in 2016, the V40 underwent a major refresh adding the distinctive new ‘face’ of the brand. Ideal for a small family, a Cross Country version was added with 40mm higher ground clearance and distinctive Cross Country features.

The Power

The V40 was powered by Volvo’s Drive-E petrol and diesel power-trains, linked either to a 6-speed automatic transmission or manual gearbox. Power output varied from 120bhp to 152bhp, enough power to handle traffic and the open road with aplomb. Efficient engines mean that fuel economy between the petrol and diesel motors proves similarly frugal.

It’s a Volvo and that means historically the company has produced some of the safest vehicles on the road. This continues as the V40 comes with one of the most comprehensive standard safety packages. Specifications vary but may include ‘City Safety’, which offers a range of collision avoidance and mitigation functions, including pedestrian and cyclist detection.

Especially good is the ‘Blind Spot Information System’. It is really helpful on, say, motorways when the driver is about to overtake another vehicle. Not only does it inform the driver about other vehicles in the blind spots on both sides of the car it also monitors and alerts the driver to cars approaching rapidly from behind. Typically Volvo.

The Interior

On the inside, load space for luggage is good and there are plenty of cubbyholes for family bits and pieces, with roomy door pockets and glovebox. Like all models in the Swedish company’s range, the interior feels robust and is as ever finished to a high standard. For the driver the layout is well designed and it is straightforward to get the hang of what all the buttons do.

Overall, it’s a nice cabin to sit in, the seats being especially comfortable. Some models may include more upgraded features like such as satellite navigation or leather upholstery. There is also a range of model-dependent connectivity options via the dashboard interface, so the technology remains fresh and useful.

Driving

This mid-sized prestige car is good to drive, giving that sense of security that Volvo’s traditionally exhibit. In use, the car is quiet and refined; road, tyre and wind noise are kept to a minimum and the drive offers well-weighted steering, good handling and a comfortable ride. A relaxed and pleasing cruiser in other words. Not at all tiring, even after a long drive.

SUV’s may be in vogue at the moment (and there are used Volvo models available on MHH Japanese Cars) but a hatchback remains the ideal all-round car that suits town and country. Check out the vehicles we have on offer on our website.
