Most people enjoy a car with style and a prestigious reputation but it is also sometimes necessary to be practical about our automotive choices. The Audi A4, for example, is a perennial favourite; great to drive and with typically high standards of German build quality. The sensible choice though is the Avant variant; all the benefits of the saloon but with the added practicality of an estate car.

The A4 Avant

The Interior
On the inside, everything is typically Audi. Superbly built, roomy and comfortable with a large, family-sized, easy-to-load boot (trunk) space at the rear. Fold the rear seats forward to create a cavernous load space. At the front, the cleanly-drawn dashboard is slightly tilted toward the driver, with the large MMI touch display, (model dependent) being the control centre for the operating system.
For years now, Audi’s A4’s interior has been hard to beat in terms of build quality, and it’s no different with the latest models. The materials used are superb, while everything works with a pleasing solidity. It’s not as flashy as some other German brands but it’s a friendly environment with great ergonomic design. For passenger comfort, the ride quality is second to none, smoothing out rough surfaces without transmitting much in the way of discomfort to the interior.
There’s a vast range of Audi A4 Avant safety systems available (again versions vary through model years and specifications) making it one of the most secure cars in the prestige sector as evidenced by its five-star rating when tested by the experts at Europe’s NCAP organisation.
On The Road
The steering may lack the ultimate finesse of the BMW 3 Series (Considered by some to be the ultimate driver’s car and also available through the MHH Japanese Cars website) but the A4 Avant is just as good to drive as the saloon. You can adjust the weighting of the steering wheel via the Drive Select feature but most drivers will be happy to leave it in Comfort mode. It’s the ideal setting across a variety of road conditions.
The car is more communicative too, allowing the driver to feel more confident pushing through corners. When a bend is tackled at significant speed drivers will appreciate how little the A4 Avant rolls through corners, making it great to drive at pace, particularly with the added grip of Quattro versions. but it’s perhaps not as enthralling as its BMW rival.
