Suzuki is well known globally for its expertise in small cars and feisty little off-road models and the new Baleno hatchback is no exception. Historically, the Japanese brand has earned high acclaim for stylish, city oriented designs; vehicles that are compact and easy to manage while also offering good performance, favourable fuel economy and low emissions.
The Baleno
A rival to the Honda Jazz and Nissan Note, it falls neatly into the supermini class of cars which have a small footprint yet maximise their interior and luggage space with clever packaging. These days this immensely popular class of vehicle are truly grown-up cars for a grown-up crowd that favours economical motoring.
The Looks
A larger car than the Suzuki Swift, the Baleno offers a more rational choice for buyers looking for extra interior space and a larger boot capacity. By design, at launch the car introduced a ‘Liquid Flow’ design theme using curving lines, expressive surfaces and a low and wide silhouette which helps to underline a strong and look. Seen from the front the body opens outward from the cabin. From the side, character lines create flowing highlights and the forward sloping rear hatch suggests the moving forward of dynamic energy. This sophisticated design helps create in a small car the impression of power and elegance.
The Power
As ever, regions vary when it comes to engine options with four petrol and one diesel engine. Far and away the most popular is the 1.0L ‘Boosterjet’ a direct-injection, turbo-charged three-cylinder engine which offers power equivalent to an older style 1.6L or 1.8L engine. Most are driven through a five-speed gearbox with an automatic gearbox an alternative. Most drivers though will prefer the manual to make the most of the lively and responsive engine.
The Baleno’s CO² emissions are low thanks to the use of an all new high tensile steel platform and other weight saving measures in the body plus the latest engine technology. Emissions are 103g/km for the 1.0L Boosterjet utilising the manual transmission; 98g/km for the 1.2-litre Dualjet with manual transmission and 93g/km for the 1.2-litre Dualjet with SHVS, which is the mild-hybrid option.
The Interior
The interior is comfortable and the fit and finish is very good. Inevitably there are some hard plastic at this price point but overall the interior is modern and functional. The luggage area has a capacity of 320 litres with the rear seat in its upright position and the rear seat and luggage board can also be repositioned to suit luggage requirements. Luggage capacity with the rear seats folded is 756 litres and 1,085 litres is available if fully loaded to the roof.
Depending on regional preferences which can vary from country to country most versions offer a comprehensive set of standard equipment. AS examples, the SZ3 model includes six airbags, front electric windows, air conditioning, DAB Radio / CD player with USB and Bluetooth connectivity. Added in higher trim levels buyers will find HID Headlights, rear privacy glass, satellite navigation, reversing camera, front fog lamps and a leather steering wheel. Other options include automatic climate control, rear electric windows, 4.2 inch central colour trip display, LED rear lights, Adaptive Cruise Control and Radar Brake Support all found on range-topping variants.
With its compact body, roomy interior and efficient power-trains all on a new generation platform, the Suzuki Baleno, as is typical for this brand, offers style, utility, and a fun driving experience combined with good fuel efficiency.
