There's a reason why Japanese cars are so popular and choosing a vehicle from the Land of the Rising Sun is always a sensible decision. Increasingly, Japanese manufacturers have upped the quality stakes to the extent that their vehicles compete with anything the mainstream market in Europe or the USA can offer. This ubiquity and high quality is clearly demonstrated by the level of exports to the global market. There is plenty to choose from and, remembering that there is usually a choice of engines and features, here's our selection of the five most popular models for 2019:

Lexus RX

This car is the perfect choice for buyers in the market for a luxury mid-size SUV with an excellent reliability rating. The RX from Toyota's prestige badge, boasts an upscale interior with large, cushioned seats for a really comfortable ride. The suspension is very smooth as well, with a powerful hybrid 3.5L V6 engine driving through an automatic CVT gearbox. Some models offer an alternative 2.0L engine but either way the car delivers an impressive performance, real refinement, high equipment levels and reasonably low running costs.

Lexus RX
Toyota Prius

Toyota Prius

With all the other hybrid or electric cars produced in the last couple of years The Toyota Prius remains the go-to car in this market sector. That's quite an achievement for a vehicle that was, more or less, the forerunner of them all. Whichever model is selected, all are powered by a 1.8L petrol engine working in conjunction with electric assistance. The hybrid model features one motor, which allied with the engine produces 123bhp, whilst the Plug-in version gains an additional motor, though it produces the same overall power. Surprisingly good to drive, all models come with plenty of kit as standard. All those Hollywood film stars who bought into the Prius revolution can't be wrong!

Honda Civic

With saloon (sedan), hatchback and hybrid (depends upon region) variants the Honda Civic has been a crowd favourite ever since it first appeared ten automotive generations ago in 1972. This great car, with a variety of engine options including the ferocious Type-R model, has built up an enviable reputation for being dependable, practical and uncomplicated. Take one for a drive and enjoy a practical interior and an accomplished and comfortable chassis for superb handling. It's an excellent all-round family car.

Honda Civic
Mazda CX-5

Mazda CX-5

For a mid-size SUV the Mazda CX-5 truly delivers the goods as a practical car for folk who like to drive. The brand eschews turbo-charging, preferring instead their own in-house 'Skyactiv' engine technology to good effect. The CX-5 is an affordable family car that pleasantly surprises with the quality and space the cabin offers. With distinctively sharp styling and a good mix of engine options (regionally dependent) there are plenty of features on offer as standard. Highly recommended.

Toyota Corolla

Back to the Toyota factory, this time for the evergreen Corolla, a name that has been around since 1966. This is the car that globally holds the best-selling title: there have been more Corollas sold than any other car.

The name was dropped in Europe for a few years in favour of the Auris model, although it was retained in Japan. It's now back in Europe and is available to buy direct from Japan with regular engines and the new highly desirable hybrid version. It's a very distinctive-looking vehicle that offers plenty to like with a high standard of build quality,
