Based on a new platform to better house the power pack, the RZ 450e from prestige Japanese brand Lexus is an all-new battery electric (BEV) sport utility vehicle (SUV). In fact, it’s the first Lexus electric vehicle to be developed from the ground up. Not just a vehicle that simply swaps battery electric power in place of a conventional engine; it goes much further to realise the potential of this EV technology to enhance performance and driving pleasure. That seems to be the philosophy of the brand.

First and foremost, the company make clear that this RZ (seen here in 450e all-wheel-drive guise) is a proper Lexus, in that it retains all the premium qualities of performance and craftsmanship associated with the badge. The company has leveraged its wealth of vehicle electrification experience to deliver the benefits of a BEV with the essential refinement and driving experience that buyers expect from Lexus, so no change there then.

On The Outside

Lexus has taken the design freedoms offered by electrification to create a vehicle that looks significantly different from conventional cars, but which nevertheless represents Lexus design. This styling approach pursues a unique look and proportions resulting in a new, simple form that captures, in the brand’s own words, ‘the spirit of technological evolution, function, and performance’.

As can be seen from the photographs, the bonnet has been lowered (in comparison with conventional Lexus models) and the intake openings have been reduced. The familiar spindle grille, between the narrow headlights that so quickly identifies the brand, has been blocked in but still retains the design. This leads in to the muscular front wings and on to the superbly sculpted styling along the sides to the condensed rear end, affirming the car’s SUV qualities of comfortable space and strong driving capabilities.

On The Inside

The RZ’s cockpit is an evolution of previous dash design, bringing together the driver’s position at the wheel and the precise arrangement of the meters, controls and displays to create a space where only small movements of hand and eye are required operate the vehicle. The arrangement of the meters, head-up display and 14-inch multimedia display has been optimised and the instrument panel has been set low, further improving the driver’s forward line of sight.

It's a clean, modern and minimalistic look with fewer elements and less ornamentation, while still using the expected high quality materials. The centre console features a new dial-type control for the shift-by-wire system, reflecting the overall design simplicity. It’s a light and open space inside.

Really moving the world of automotive technology forward another giant step, Lexus has introduced a number of ‘human-centred’ (this means that we ordinary folk can still have control) advanced technology features in the RZ that enhance comfort, convenience, and life on board. In particular, there are two Lexus firsts: a dimmable panoramic roof with a special coating to reduce heat radiation, and optional ‘radiant’ heaters for the driver and front passenger.

Essentially, radiant heating is positioned at knee-level in front of the driver and front passenger, beneath the steering column and lower instrument panel. This, by the way, is in addition to seat heaters and a heated steering wheel, and helps speed up the warming of front sitters. It’s rather like the effect of having a cosy blanket wrapped around the legs, just like the old days of motoring only without the draughts. The difference in this case is that this system saves energy, thus being less of a drain on battery usage.

More conventionally, The RZ is equipped with an all-new Lexus Link multimedia platform, with faster, more intuitive operation and increased functions for connectivity, efficient journey planning and information. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are of course present and correct.

On The Road

The RZ uses a lithium-ion battery in a stack comprising 96 cells, with a total output of 71.4kW. It is located entirely beneath the cabin and forms an integral part of the platform. Its position also contributes to the car’s low centre of gravity, aiding ride and handling. The SUV sits well on the road and of course acceleration is instant. This is backed up by an intelligent new all-wheel-drive system that balances the drive around all four wheels, further aiding traction. Range is expected to be in excess of 250 miles, utilising different modes to suit the occasion.

Of especial note is the optional ‘One Motion Grip’ steer-by-wire system and it’s one of the most significant new technologies featured in the Lexus RZ. A new steering yoke replaces the traditional steering wheel. There is no mechanical link and no conventional steering column; instead, an electrical connection is used to send inputs from the steering wheel to the wheels, making life even easier for the driver, even if it all feels a bit remote control-like. The result however is instant response and more precise steering control.

Over 300bhp delivers a 0-62mph time of 5.6 seconds, so the car is swift enough. Early testers have reported a smooth driving performance and fine handling for an SUV.
