The Nissan Elgrand is described as either a Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) or minivan depending upon global region. On sale since 1997, it is now in its third generation and although it is only offered for sale in a few countries, it’s reputation has preceded it and it is a popular import to destinations around the world.

Ideal For The Family

The Nissan Elgrand is big; of that there is no question. It is a large, van-like, comprehensively equipped vehicle perfect for the family transport. The Elgrand also offers a level of comfort and luxury rarely seen in a family-focused vehicle. The shape allows the transportation of up to eight people across three rows of seats. These seats are configured variously to accommodate luggage or to move large objects. Some models may offer one-touch power-folding rear seats. Multi-purpose indeed.

Access for all to the rear of the vehicle is easy thanks to huge sliding doors. Depending upon the model the Nissan Elgrand comes with either cloth or leather upholstery and some variants even have a TV/DVD screen to keep rear passengers entertained. Essential cupholders abound throughout and, depending upon specification, a sunroof may be available.

Engines & Options

All models currently available offer either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. A 250 prefix to the trim level indicates a 2.5L engine while the 350 prefix represents, as might be anticipated, a 3.5L V6 engine. Choice of engine may vary according to trim levels. Whichever engine is selected the buyer can be sure of reliability as they are both established Nissan units.

The V6 is smooth, refined, and delivers plenty of performance to get even a vehicle the size of the Elgrand going and it does it in some style. If economy is more important, the 2.5L would be perhaps the better option, although of course it will not offer the same performance level as the larger unit. Whichever engine is selected, they all drive through a CVT gearbox.

Over time, as technology has updated itself, the sort of safety equipment we have come to expect is various featured depending upon the age of the vehicle. Clearly, the most recent models will be the best equipped. Perhaps the most useful given the gargantuan proportions, is ‘All-around Park Assist’ and while manoeuvring, 'Collision Avoidance Assist' applies the brakes at low speeds to collisions. Additionally, and again this is model and region dependent, a tyre pressure monitor, radar cruise control, rear parking sensors, active front lighting, and 'Dynamic Vehicle Control' may feature.

The Drive

As mentioned, the Nissan Elgrand is a big car but it drives surprisingly well and owner reviews are very positive. It is very refined and comfortable on the road and steers, and handles well for such a large vehicle. Obviously, this MPV is very much targeted at a niche market but when space, seats and versatility is needed this vehicle is hard to beat and here at MHH Japanese Cars we have a fine selection of Elgrand models available.
