Sport Utility Vehicles were initially designed for the purpose of off-roading, working and leisure activities, having the added benefit of four-wheel driving capability. Some say that the latest offerings have gone soft; that they are meant for soft-roading only on smooth man-made surfaces. To an extent that is true but there are still a variety of vehicles that continue to keep the off-road faith and they and others are available from our wide-ranging stock at MHH Japanese Cars. Not all of us can reside in towns and cities. Some continue to hold to rural values and live and work in the countryside. Even so, they still have to go about their business and children still have to be ferried to school. That's where a proper hardcore SUV will come into its own. Yet hardcore does not have to mean rough. Today's crop of sport utility vehicles also feature many of the luxuries, accessories and technology we have come to expect in our mainstream motors. Here's just a small selection:
Nissan X-Trail
The Nissan X-Trail is the perfect vehicle for family adventures. There's plenty of interior space with five or seven seat layouts and of course all the premium features are included within the contemporary, robust design. The Intelligent 4x4 system means it’s highly capable off-road, with a versatile and multi-functional character that makes it great for all surfaces be it for work or play. With a towing capability of up to 2,000kg (4400lbs) it’s popular with drivers who own trailers or caravans.
The latest X-Trail features two recently new engines – one petrol and one diesel. There's also a choice of transmissions – a six-speed manual or a new seven-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) automatic. Many used models offer the tried and trusted two-litre engine, some with hybrid technology, so there is an X-Trail for everyone.
Toyota Land Cruiser
It could be argued that this is the legendary vehicle that started the whole modern off-road era. A feature of many outdoor TV programmes, the rugged profile hasn't changed much even after an off-road heritage spanning more than 65 years. Amazingly, the Land Cruiser range continues to retain the well-known reputation, combining outstanding quality, durability and reliability with amazing off-road performance.
The Toyota brand introduced a series of improvements in 2014 that give the Land Cruiser new styling, an improved interior and revised handling. This included detailed adjustments to the suspension systems – both the standard set-up and the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) featured on higher grade models offer even better stability and ride comfort. Depending on global region, engine and gearbox versions vary but the Japanese market still majors in the mighty 4.0 and 4.6L power-plants. Like Zorro, the legend goes on and on.
Honda CR-V
Since the launch of the original CR-V in 1995, this model has proved to be extremely popular in the SUV sector, thanks to its efficient use of space. The latest variant builds on this past history to become the most practical and comfortable CR-V yet. Technology is not overlooked either: Depending upon the model, Honda offer twin USB ports in the rear and also charging points for phones, tablets and other personal electronic devices. Some range-topping variants also benefit from a hands-free tailgate, complete with the ability to set opening height for use in confined spaces.
Petrol models of CR-V are available with the option of seven seats and all three seat rows recline for extra passenger comfort. Power comes from a trusted 1500cc engine and there is also a hybrid 2.0L alternative. Check out our available models on the MHH Japanese Car stock list.
