Sometimes, a minivan or people carrier is the only vehicle for the job. They are ideal for a growing family or for when a large internal area is needed, for example, a wheelchair user. That’s why, in some global markets, they are referred to as MPV’s: Multi-Purpose Vehicles. In recent years, our motoring values have moved with the times through climate change and emission regulation and the vehicles that we buy are these days more about lifestyle than outright performance. Such a vehicle is the Toyota Alphard.
A Mighty Presence
Not available new in all markets, but certainly available to buy used through MHH Japanese Cars in right-hand drive, the Toyota Alphard is a luxury and highly configurable minivan from the biggest car maker in the world. As can be seen from the images, this vehicle is large and very distinctive with a dynamic design and imposing front end, offering a real presence on and a commanding view of the road ahead thanks to the large windows.
On The Inside
With all that surrounding glass the interior of the Alphard is bright and airy. Although technology and trim will vary depending upon individual specifications, the interior itself has a modern structure created by the seamless connection from the instrument panel to the door trim and the centre console. This is meant to be a luxury vehicle so the quality of the materials, sculpted metal surfaces and wood-grain ornamentation are all first class. The large, very comfortable seats and load space are configurable and there is extra storage under the third row of seats.
Comfort is the name of the game here and the ride quality reflects that. Double-wishbone suspension is installed on the rear to deliver a luxurious ride and exceptional handling stability. Extensive sound and vibration dampening and an aerodynamic wind-noise reducing body shape make for a quiet ride at all speeds, as would be expected from of a luxury vehicle.
The Drive
There’s a choice of two and four-wheel drive, the latter thanks to a hybrid electric system. Power comes from a choice of fuel-efficient 2.5L or 3.5L petrol engines driving through either a six or seven-speed sequential ‘Shiftmatic’ auto gearbox. This vehicle is all about smoothness, comfort and ease of driving. This is a car for wafting along rather than pressing the pedal to the metal. The ride is composed, surprisingly so given the size, yet from behind the wheel the Alphard drives like a regular car.
The Technology
As mentioned the four-wheel-drive is via a hybrid electric system but the technology does not stop there. Model dependent, the buyer can expect the latest in sensor technology supporting collision avoidance during low-speed manoeuvring regardless of accelerator or brake pedal operation, thus mitigating collision damage. Infotainment and connectivity are all on board too.
